Before you get to meet your baby, you spend a swell (so to speak) nine months getting acquainted with your growing belly. The first pregnancy journal devoted 100% to you and your belly, The Belly Book is organized by trimester and includes pages for “time-lapse” belly photos and ultrasound images, as well as prompts for writing about morning sickness, food cravings, maternity clothes you never want to see again, and much more.

A prolific writer, speaker, film maker, and radio show host, she also contributed to TED Talks and wrote several adult and children''s books. I looked through dozens of these sorts of books on Amazon, at the bookstore, and on Etsy. I am so glad I chose this book. So the name is really hokey, and it''s not as cute as some of the others. I can get over that, as the inside of the book is great. A lot of the books I looked at had some really weird questions in them to answer and too much focus on "my growing boobs" and "I''m puking all the time" and things you wouldn''t exactly want in a book. This book covers those topics but in a more tactful, polite way. Yet, it''s still fun. The prompts/questions were by far the best of all the books I saw. I also like that the book is organized by weeks, not months, and has space for belly bump pictures and ultrasound photos. There is a page for each prenatal visit and for each week. There are also other pages regarding how we told family, etc. I feel like this book covers all the essentials in a fun yet diplomatic way (won''t feel weird about sharing it with people), and is the right length. I''d intended to also keep a journal, but I''ve been so tired that I''ve just been writing in this book. It has been a fun experience.

This is our first pregnancy and I was looking for a book to record the experience. This one is good but not amazing.

Pros:
-- It''s simple but cute.
-- Some of the wording is clever and funny.
-- It has a band that can be used to keep it from opening up randomly.
-- It has pages dedicated to appointments and a spot to glue/tape your ultrasound
-- It has belly pic pages (although I do mention a con with this one also)

Cons:
-- A lot of the first trimester (of mine anyway) will be empty because they have so many pages dedicated to week by week belly picks. I''m 14 weeks and only just started having a tiny bump a couple of weeks ago, so those pages are useless unless I just want to look at my normal pre-pregnancy belly.
-- Another thing that didn''t line up was our heartbeat appointment. In the book it is, I believe, the first thing for the second trimester. I didn''t realize and wrote our experience in at our 12 week appointment, because that is when it happened.
-- There is a lot in the book that is useless to me because it has nothing to do with pregnancy, to me anyway. Like asking me what type of music I''m listening to this week....the same music I was listening to last week and pre-pregnancy. I feel like with some of those questions it starts acting more like a diary/journal instead of a pregnancy book/journal. But if you like that sort of thing then that would be a pro for you of course!

None of the cons are HUGE deal breakers and I did search many books on Amazon, some of which were awful in my opinion and even worse in the "diary" likeness. This one does help you keep a record of appontments and how you felt, and have the spots for the pictures, etc. Spend some time browsing the books before you buy and make sure this is what you were looking for though.

Great book that has just enough guidance but also has space for you to add extra thoughts for your baby. This is our first baby and I wanted a simple book to remember these moments and for my child to have one day. I''m a crafty person but having too much "freeness" with things like this can stress me out. So I''d say it''s the perfect amount of guidance questions with blank spaces to add other thoughts. It''s separated into trimesters and by weeks. It also has some humor in it with questions like "How big is your appetite? The size of Rhoad Island, Texas, or Louisiana purchase?" I only wish it had a folder/envelope for each trimester to hold extra pictures and such but that doesn''t take away from how cute and useful it is. Great way to track belly photos and doctor visits also with keeping track of the joys and not so joys of being pregnant. It''s a good buy.

If you do purchase, read through the whole thing once you get it so you remember to write down things like "first time I felt the flutter" or "first time I wore maternity clothes."

ATTENTION LADIES!! You may have read the negative reviews stating that the trimester weeks are wrong in this journal and the reviewer were reasonably upset about having filled it out wrong. Well, here''s why that happened: The book does not give clear instructions on WEEK 1. WEEK 1 is supposed to be the WEEK YOU CONCEIVED in (usually the middle of your cycle) NOT THE FIRST WEEK OF THE CYCLE ( that is your period week). The weeks in the journal are following BABY''S GESTATIONAL AGE during the pregnancy not the actual 40 weeks of the pregnancy itself. Baby is full term and due at the gestational age of 38 weeks, your pregnancy lasts on average 40 weeks counted from the start of the cycle you conceived in. WEEK 38 to 39 in the journal is your due date range.

Downsides:
You have to look through the whole "trimester" section to know what to write, when.
It goes out of order- there should be little section markers. Pre-natal visit info is at the back of each trimester section for instance.
The questions about each week''s symptoms/activities change, which is nice, but I stopped filling it out because I felt the questions weren''t particularly interesting. But, maybe for some people who like writing more and don''t need creative provocation would enjoy it.
It would also be helpful if the "weeks" (week 1, week 2, etc.) were clarified- like, is week 1 the first week after your last period or...?

Upsides:
If you remember to fill it out regularly, it is probably going to be fun to look back at.
The questions aren''t the same every week, so you get "aversion/craving" questions and "movie watched this week, reflections" writing prompts.
The tone is nice and laid back, funny language.

Overall, kind of fun, but think there could be some improvements made to make it easier/more fun to fill out.

I had a love/hate relationship with this book.

On the one hand, I love that it included things I never would have thought to include, myself (if the book was blank). For example, they have spots for cravings and aversions, doctor appointments, and little mementos from the baby shower.

On the other hand, the biggest complaint I have is that this book stops at week 39! Which is crap because a lot of people don''t deliver by or before then. I sure didn''t!

I also don''t like that, at the end of the first and second trimesters there''s a free write spot with line pages to include any lingering thoughts for that trimester. The third section did not include that space, which I felt was lacking and inconsistent.

Finally, there are some pages where the space to write is so painfully small because the book has questions to answer... Or some weeks don''t have any space at all!

So, I give it a 3 star for creative content. But in all honesty, if I had seen this book before buying it, I may have opted for a different one entirely... Or just made my own!

The trimesters are wrong, it only goes to week 39 but many moms go to 41 weeks. It starts at week 1, asking you if you knew you were pregnant....when you haven''t even conceived yet. At week 33 it says you only have a month to go...?? It only gives you 4 lines to write about the special moment of seeing your baby in the first ultrasound and 6 lines to write about ALL of your friends and families reactions to your pregnancy announcement but gives you half a page to write about the first time a complete stranger touched your belly..... You''ll end up crossing off half of the prompts to write in your own comments and memories. The best feature is having room for weekly pictures. Trust me, there are better pregnancy journals out there, keep looking.

This is the second Belly Book I have bought because I loved writing in the first one so much. Buying this book was the first thing I did after I discovered I was expecting for the second time :o) The lay out is American, in as much as talking about your OB GYN and such but I just adapted it to what I wanted to say. There are some really nice pages where you can record things such as nicknames you have named your bump and the first time you wore stretchy maternity pants and for how many days in a row!
