Product Description

Chanie Apfelbaum, creator of world-renowned kosher food blog Busy In Brooklyn, makes her cookbook debut with a collection of modern, cultural, trendy, and bold dishes that reflect her passion for reinventing traditional foods with a Millennial vibe.
Millennial Kosher features:
-Over 150 innovative recipes for everyday and holiday meals
-Beautiful color photos for every dish
-Meatless Meals section includes dairy-free and vegetarian options
-Guide to kosher meat cookery
-Comprehensive tools and ingredient list

The millennial kosher kitchen is one in which food is reinvented and reimagined in new and exciting ways. It includes ingredients that are healthier, fresher, and more vibrant than ever before. Yesterday''s margarine is today''s coconut oil, bone broth is the new chicken soup, and the onion soup mix of our youth is replaced with umami-rich porcini mushroom powder.

Today, kosher food is spicier and bolder than the food we grew up eating. There''s an emphasis on fresh and seasonal ingredients, less processed foods, and healthier nondairy alternatives. Modern kosher food reinterprets and reinvents tradition, while still staying true to our heritage. It''s food that''s influenced by cultural cuisine and not limited to, but inspired by, kosher guidelines. There is still a place for the kosher comfort foods of our youth, and for that there are hundreds of cookbooks. But for now, it''s time for Millennial Kosher.

About the Author

Born and raised in a kosher home in Brooklyn, Chanie Apfelbaum grew up eating traditional Jewish foods such as gefilte fish, stuffed cabbage, and matzah ball soup. Today, living just a few blocks from her childhood home, she revisits family favorites and reinvents traditional holiday dishes.

Chanie''s creative twists on old-time cuisine prove that kosher fare is anything but old-fashioned. With five little ones in tow, she celebrates her heritage one dish at a time, creating balanced recipes with a modern flair and Middle Eastern vibe.

Chanie works as a recipe developer and food photographer. She is a contributing writer to Mishpacha Magazine''s Family Table and kosher.com, as well as a guest writer for numerous publications and websites. She has been featured in many national publications and media, including The Wall Street Journal, The Huffington Post, News12 Brooklyn, The Meredith Vieira Show, Thrillist, and more. Chanie also shares her love of food, family, and tradition through fun and educational cooking demonstrations to audiences worldwide.

This cookbook is beautiful, fun to read and most importantly, full of delicious recipes. It is clearly written and full of practical tips and alternative ideas. I appreciate the "variations" that Chanie suggests on the bottom of recipes so I can work with what I have on hand. The "freezer-friendly" mention on many recipes is very helpful to me. The "savory snacks" section is a nice addition. I have been following Busy In Brooklyn for like five years and knew I needed to buy this. (I don''t own many cookbooks.) I am thrilled that there are so many original recipes here. I can see my family enjoying this cookbook for a long, long time.
While there aren''t many recipes using heaps of mayonnaise and sugar, some recipes call for processed ingredients that I personally try to avoid. I still give this cookbook 5 stars because the majority of recipes are healthy and gorgeous.
Anyone, kosher or not, can enjoy this cookbook.

Update 03/07/21: We tried the Tomato soup with ravioli croutons and the Salmon with portobello mushrooms. We really enoyed these two dishes. The soup had a good taste, the croutons were a little messy (probably my own fault). But my toddler drank the soup and he can be a little selective sometimes. The salmon dish was delicious, I enjoyed the asian style dressing a lot. I will try the sweet recipes again with less sugar.
I’m looking forward to trying more savory recipes...this week i will try two soups from this book. :)

So far i have tried 5 recipes and I feel a little disappointed. The Cookie butter frappuccino was very very sweet...i regret buying the cookie butter (even though i really like the speculatis). The overnight afogado oats were just ok, not very delicious as i had envisioned from the book’s picture (again, very sweet). The toasts were ok...i guess i was expecting a “wow” factor based on the pictures...the sweet tahini was again super sweet for me. The Lachmagine flatbread was delicious to me but for my husband it was too sweet. I guess it depends on the type of apricot jam one uses. I will use less next time. The book is definitely beautiful to look at but i was expecting to be “wowed” by the recipes (as with Claudia Roden’s Book of Jewish food which contains recipes from different parts of the world). This book was very expensive so I will continue trying the recipes and hopefully get excellent results. Again, the book’s photography is beautiful...similar to Ottolenghi’s pictures (whose recipes are all so delicious but very time intensive for me as a new mother).

This cookbook is absolutely AMAZING! As a big fan of Chanie’s blog, I couldn’t wait for her book. The first thing my daughter and I did when it arrived was scour all of the pages drooling over the recipes. The food is kid-friendly, but mostly healthy, and best of all adult-friendly too! My family devoured the ramen shakshuka as an easy dinner on a busy weeknight.

Chanie does a great job of taking any fear out of more advanced cooking techniques and offers ways to use ingredients that many readers may love to eat, but have not used in their own homes before. I can’t wait to try all of her recipes!

A favorite cookbook with a few recipes that are already family classics! While we do not keep Kosher, we loved this book all the same! This book opened us up to making shakshuka and challah bread. This would be great for beginners as it covers pantry basics and the recipes are simplified and easy to follow, but is equally great for fans of this type of cuisine that want to delve further into items they haven’t cooked before. You could easily make an entire dinner party menu using only this book.

Great cookbook---aside from being beautiful! there is a picture for every recipe (I hate when cookbooks dont and instead have a picture of the author twirling a spoon or something). She has a lot of "fast"/easy recipes but also healthy recipes. I''ve already made quite a few things (even though Amazon delivered late), all came out great!
